How to Enroll at BASIS When Moving to Arizona

Moving can be challenging—but finding a great school shouldn’t be! At BASIS Charter Schools, we aim to make the enrollment process as simple as possible for families who are applying from out of state.

If your move is coming up soon, we recommend filling out an application now! By accepting an enrollment offer, you can rest assured that your child has an open seat reserved for them at one of our top-ranked, tuition-free charter schools.

Apply via our online enrollment portal

Although students have to be Arizona residents to attend BASIS Charter Schools in Arizona, the initial application process can be completed while you are living out of the state or even out of the country!

All BASIS Charter School applications—whether you’re applying from out of state or not—are submitted via our online enrollment portal. Visit our Apply page to get started.

Applications only take about 10 minutes to complete, and there is no paperwork required. Plus, you can apply to multiple BASIS Charter Schools within one application. This can be helpful for families who do not know exactly which neighborhood they’ll be moving to.

When should you apply?

If you’re looking to enroll for the upcoming school year, we recommend applying in the fall during the Open Enrollment period. This gives you the best chance of securing a seat, as applications submitted during Open Enrollment are included in our annual enrollment lottery.

If you miss the Open Enrollment period or if you’re looking to apply for the current school year, don’t worry! We continue to accept applications year round. For more information about how to join BASIS mid-way through the current school year, click here.

When will you know if your child has been offered a seat at BASIS?

We understand that families who are preparing to relocate may want to get their school plans squared away as soon as possible.

If you applied during the Open Enrollment period for the upcoming school year, you can expect to receive your results by the end of the day on the published lottery date. The lottery for our Arizona schools typically occurs in mid to late January.

If you applied outside of the Open Enrollment period, you can expect to hear back from us within 2–3 days.

Applicants who are offered a seat at one of our schools will be provided with instructions for accepting the offer, completing the online registration form, and submitting registration documents to the school. Applicants who are not offered enrollment will be placed on a waitlist.

If you end up getting waitlisted for your first-choice school, don’t worry. We continue to make offers to waitlisted applicants as seats become available. Plus, you can remain on the waitlist even after accepting a seat at another BASIS Charter School in Arizona. If your child completes a full year at another BASIS Charter School campus, you will receive enrollment priority when transferring to your preferred Arizona campus the following year.

Provide proof of Arizona residency before the first day of school

After you’ve accepted a seat at one of our schools, you will receive information on how to complete the enrollment process. This includes completing an online registration form and providing certain documents to the school.

Your school’s registrar will provide you with a timeline for returning documents to the schools and providing your proof of residency. Be sure to let your registrar know what your new address will be and when your move will be finalized.

Proof of residency is due no later than the first day of the school year. Or, if you are starting in the middle of the year, no later than the first day your child plans to begin school. Valid proof of residency documents include (but are not limited to):

  • Driver’s license
  • Mortgage documents
  • Lease or rental agreements
  • Payroll stub
  • Water, electric, gas, cable or phone bill

If you have any questions about what counts as valid proof of residency, please reach out to your school registrar directly.

What are the residency requirements for BASIS Charter Schools in Arizona?

Our Arizona schools are open to all Arizona residents. BASIS Charter Schools in Arizona are not restricted by school district boundaries, so you are free to attend any school in the state. Proof of Arizona residency is due to the school no later than the first day of the school year.
