Going Green and Going for Gold: BASIS Tucson North Wins Arizona Envirothon

A group of students from BASIS Tucson North are making a positive impact on the environment while showing off their academic prowess!

BASIS Tucson North won first place at the 2025
Arizona Envirothon, an environmental competition for high school students. This is the team’s second first-place win in a row!

Congratulations to the winning BASIS Tucson North team:

  • Sabine B. – Grade 10
  • Jimmy K. – Grade 12
  • Celine L. – Grade 11
  • Eddie T. – Grade 10
  • Andrew W. – Grade 10

These students will be advancing to a national Envirothon competition held this summer.

What is the Arizona Envirothon?

During the Arizona Envirothon, teams from around the state gather ecological data, develop solutions to environmental issues, and present their findings. Topic areas covered in the Arizona Envirothon include aquatic ecology, soil and land use, wildlife, and forestry.

The Arizona Envirothon equips students with the critical thinking tools necessary to preserve the state’s natural resources. By delving deep into real-world environmental challenges, students learn about how individual actions can make a big difference.

Practicing problem-solving skills

Envirothon gives BASIS students the unique opportunity to turn classroom knowledge into action. It’s a fun, hands-on way for students to develop problem-solving and teamwork skills.

“This first place in the state Envirothon competition really highlights the hard work and dedication of our great students,” says John-Paul Mann, physics teacher at BASIS Tucson North and club advisor for the Envirothon team. “Our team did an amazing job taking concepts they had learned about in the classroom and applying them to real-world applications!”

Next steps for the BASIS Tucson North Envirothon team

With their impressive state win, the BASIS Tucson North Envirothon team has secured a spot in the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon this summer. The NCF Envirothon is the largest environmental competition in North America. This year, it will be held in Alberta, Canada.

Mr. Mann notes that the team has been focusing heavily on studying wildlife and forestry, since the Canadian ecosystem is so different from what the team is used to in the Arizona desert!

“This is our second year in a row winning the Arizona Envirothon competition,” says Mr. Mann. “Last year, we went to New York for the NCF Envirothon and placed 18th out of roughly 50 teams. We’re very excited to travel to Canada this year and are hoping to improve our standing!”

Students from 44 states and 8 Canadian provinces will come together to compete in the NCF Envirothon this July. The top teams will be awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 per student.

We wish our BASIS Tucson North Envirothon team all the best as they prepare for this exciting competition!
