146 BASIS Charter School Students Named 2025 National Merit Semifinalists

More than 140 students from across the BASIS Charter Schools network are moving on to the next step in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – BASIS Charter Schools is proud to announce that 146 high school seniors from 13 different BASIS Charter School campuses have been recognized as Semifinalists in the annual National Merit® Scholarship Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is one of the largest academic competitions in the country. In the spring and summer of 2025, approximately 6,870 students from across the U.S. will be awarded National Merit Scholarships, totaling nearly $26 million in merit aid.

To enter the program, students take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). This test, which is structured similarly to the SAT®, is designed to measure students’ reading, writing, and math skills. Out of the approximately 1.3 million students who take the PSAT/NMSQT® each year, only 16,000 high-scoring students qualify as Semifinalists.

National Merit Semifinalists represent less than 1% of all U.S. high school seniors—but at BASIS Charter Schools, this year’s Semifinalists make up 22% of the tuition-free charter school network’s 2025 graduating class.

The BASIS Charter School network is well known for its rigorous, college preparatory curriculum and excellent rankings. In 2024, 11 BASIS Charter Schools were ranked in the top 100 high schools in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report, with BASIS Peoria claiming the top spot as the #1 ranked high school in the nation.

“Congratulations to each and every one of our talented Semifinalists,” says Peter Bezanson, BASIS Educational Ventures CEO and co-chairman. “The National Merit Scholarship Program is highly competitive, and these students worked hard to earn this accolade. We wish them the best of luck as they advance in the competition!”

The following BASIS Charter School Class of 2025 students have advanced to the Semifinalist stage of the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students will go on to compete for a variety of merit-based scholarships, which will be awarded from April to July 2025.
