The Black Vision: Black History Showcase at BASIS DC

BASIS Washington, D.C. celebrated the end of Black History Month 2025 with their very own fine arts showcase highlighting Black culture.

The event, titled “The Black Vision: A Canvas of Culture,” was held on campus on Feb 28, 2025. It was organized by the school’s Black Student Union.

The purpose of the showcase was to highlight the creativity, resilience, excellence of the Black community. Attendees enjoyed a variety of fine arts, including:

  • Poetry written and performed by students
  • Original artwork hung up around the campus
  • Step performances featuring students of all grade levels
  • A fashion show highlighting Black fashion from different periods, such as the Roaring 20s, the 80s, and the 90s

Calvery Cooper, Head of School at BASIS DC, says that the event was a fantastic way to bring the school community together. “This event not only celebrated Black culture—it fostered a sense of community, unity, and pride at BASIS DC,” says Cooper. “The showcase was a reminder of the strength and creativity of the Black community, and an opportunity for us all to come together, learn, and be inspired.”

This event was especially meaningful for the seniors in the BASIS DC Black Student Union. Since BASIS seniors spend the final trimester of their senior year completing off-campus
Senior Projects, this event was one of the last times they will have to get together with their younger peers.

We are so proud of the BASIS DC Black Student Union for putting on an amazing event! It was a fun evening for students, parents, and teachers alike—and a wonderful way to close out Black History Month.
