BASIS Mesa Model UN Team Competes at SEKMUN in Madrid

Over Spring Break 2025, the BASIS Mesa Model UN team traveled to Madrid, Spain to participate in SEKMUN, a long-running Model UN conference in which students ages 15–18 debate complex international issues.

This trip came just a few short months after the BASIS Mesa Model UN team
hosted their very own conference (NovaMUN) for local high schools. This was their very first time attending a conference outside of Arizona, and we couldn’t be prouder of them for representing BASIS Mesa on the international stage!

Competing alongside students from around the world

The team spent three days debating alongside nearly 500 delegates from around the world, including Argentina, Colombia, Kenya, and the UK. Four of our team members even took on the challenge of debating entirely in Spanish!

The SEKMUN conference was a true immersion into the spirit of the United Nations, as the BASIS Mesa Model UN team collaborated with peers from diverse backgrounds and engaged in diplomatic problem-solving. Beyond the competition, SEKMUN pushed the BASIS Mesa Model UN team to think more critically about international issues and connect with students worldwide, broadening their perspectives.

“This conference was a huge step for the BASIS Mesa Model UN team’s growth within the global MUN community,” says Christopher Lester, Head of School at BASIS Mesa. “I’m excited for them to continue expanding their reach!”

Congratulations to our student delegates!

Congratulations to the BASIS Mesa Model UN Team for their remarkable skill and dedication! One student, Ava Campbell, even won a Best Delegate award in her committee during SEKMUN.

We are especially impressed that four of our students participated in Spanish-speaking committees. This is an amazing testament to the BASIS Mesa Spanish teacher, Mrs. Gallardo.

The BASIS Mesa Model UN team would also like to give a shoutout to Mr. Adam Swantko, Faculty Advisor, and Mr. Adam Engle, Art Teacher, for leading the trip.

“We had been preparing for this conference for more than a year,” says Dina I., Club President. “This experience showed us what’s possible for our team!”
