Congratulations to Our Regeneron Scholars

Congratulations to Our Regeneron Scholars

Congratulations to our two BASIS Charter School students who were named as scholars in the 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search: Matthew Kim from BASIS Oro Valley and Hannah Guan from BASIS San Antonio Shavano.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS) is a long-running competition honoring promising young scientists from across the country. Every year, an estimated 1,900 high school seniors enter the competition by submitting original scientific research. This research typically focuses on ideas that could solve important societal challenges. From the pool of participants, the competition selects 300 students as Regeneron STS scholars.

As scholars, Matthew Kim and Hannah Guan will be awarded $2,000 each. $2,000 will also be awarded to their respective schools.

Matthew Kim’s project is titled “Slowing Down Ice Melting From Thermal Radiation via Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Eggshells.” It examines whether eco-friendly scraps could be used to slow the rate at which sea ice melts. To learn more about Matthew’s project, check out his interview with Tucson-based newspaper The Explorer.

Hannah Guan’s project, “Multi-Dimensional Interpretable Interaction Network (MDiiN) for Modeling Aging Health and Mortality,” focuses on demonstrating how an individual’s health evolves over time. On January 24, 2023, it was announced that Hannah was also selected as one of the competition’s top 40 finalists. In March, she will travel to Washington, D.C. to present her project to a committee of judges and compete for additional awards ranging from $25,000 to $250,000 in college financial aid. Hannah’s recognition as a finalist was recently covered by local news outlet San Antonio Current.

We are incredibly proud of what these two BASIS Charter School students have achieved and we wish Hannah all the best with the rest of the competition!
