BASIS San Antonio Shavano Senior Named First-Ever Jack Kent Cooke Scholar

Meet Vedansh M., senior at BASIS San Antonio Shavano, who is making history by being the first-ever Jack Kent Cooke Scholar at BASIS Texas Charter Schools. This scholarship, awarded to students throughout the United States, honors 60 high school seniors who were named recipients of the Cooke College Scholarship. Vedansh is one of 10 high school seniors from Texas who earned the award.

The Cooke College Scholarship awards up to $55,000 a year towards completion of a bachelor’s degree at any accredited undergraduate program. For Vedansh, this means that his entire undergraduate career at Georgia Institute of Technology will be covered by this award. “They’re a community to be a part of even past college. Alumni get involved and it’s just a great support system and a great scholarship,” explains Vedansh, “They also give you internship stipends and graduate scholarships as well.”

According to College Counselor at BASIS San Antonio Shavano, Aisha Bakir, Vedansh’s award sets a great precedent for rising seniors. Through Vedansh’s success, the college counselors are now prepared and equipped to advise future students through the rigorous application process at the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

“This experience has significantly strengthened our insight into what distinguishes a competitive candidate for this scholarship,” said Bakir. “We are now able to guide students with greater precision and confidence, ensuring they are prepared for the process and positioned to stand out.”

In addition to this great achievement, Vedansh is still making the most of his senior year before starting college in the Fall. He currently participates in several research internships at local startups in San Antonio, including the lab work he is conducting at UTSA for his senior project.

Additionally, Vedansh leads a non-profit organization that provides online tutoring through his popular YouTube channel, “Crunch Math”.

Vedansh’s drive, curiosity, and commitment to service reflect the impact BASIS Texas Charter Schools students are making both inside and outside the classroom, setting a strong example for future scholars.

Congratulations to Vedansh on this outstanding achievement.
