BASIS Scottsdale Unveils the Curley Family Fieldhouse, Thanks to a Donation From Two Local Physicians

BASIS Scottsdale dedicated its newly renovated gymnasium on Thursday, November 30, 2023. The dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting took place at the conclusion of the girls’ JV basketball game, prior to the boys’ varsity game tipoff. It was the first home basketball game of the season for both squads, and a nice way to kick off the 2023–24 home schedule!

The gymnasium was dedicated as the Curley Family Fieldhouse. The new name comes thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Anjaly Curley and Dr. Brendan Curley, who are BASIS Scottsdale’s latest Capital Campaign Donors. The Curleys, who have two children at BASIS Scottsdale, donated a very generous sum which was utilized to commission and install four new cutting-edge moveable basketball hoops, enabling BASIS Scottsdale’s gymnasium to become a true modern athletic “fieldhouse.”

During the ceremony between the two basketball games, the Curley family participated in a ribbon cutting and unveiling of the new “fieldhouse” sign and new basketball hoops.

BASIS Ed Arizona CEO Carolyn McGarvey delivered a heartfelt thank you to the Curley family and expressed how excited she was for the new fieldhouse, and the family expressed their appreciation for the ceremony and thanks, too. Then the BASIS Scottsdale Bulldogs varsity squad handed the Curley family a basketball signed by the team, a card of thanks signed by students, and customized jerseys—one a boys team jersey, and one a girls team jersey—with the Curleys’ names on the back.

The girls’ JV team won their game. Unfortunately, the boys’ varsity squad lost their tilt—but both squads looked great in the new Curley Family Fieldhouse!

“This incredible donation and resulting project allow for more useable space for BASIS Scottsdale students—all of our students, from middle schoolers to high schoolers, and from basketball players to athletes in other sports and students in gym glass,” said Patti Bezanson, co-chair of BASIS Educational Ventures. “This project helps us increase student activities, as well as options for extracurriculars, while also providing space for additional PE classes—as the gymnasium may now be split in half! In addition, it will help streamline practice schedules and other sports and athletic-related needs on this awesome campus.”

Bezanson continued, “It is extraordinarily generous. I know the Curley family personally. They’re amazing people and cherished members of our community. All of the students, families, teachers, and staff at BASIS Scottsdale are grateful for their donation, and can’t wait to use the new Curley Family Fieldhouse!”

The Curley family has two children in BASIS Scottsdale, a grade 4 student and a grade 6 student.

BASIS Scottsdale is what we call a “legacy school” in the BASIS Charter Schools network: It opened in 2003 as the second-ever BASIS Charter School. Of course, there are now 39 schools in the BASIS Charter School network. As of 2023, BASIS Scottsdale is ranked as the #20 high school in America, out of more than 24,000 schools assessed, according to U.S. News & World Report’s highly regarded rankings. BASIS Scottsdale is also the #2 campus in the U.S. for teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), as well as the #4 public charter school in the entire nation. It’s also the #2 school of any type in the state of Arizona.

“We’re very appreciative of the Curley family,” said BASIS Scottsdale Head of School Tyler Garvey. “We appreciate all of our donors, including Capital Campaign Donors, and Annual Teacher Fund (ATF) donors, too. This new fieldhouse facility is beyond generous and will have a positive impact on students right away. Many thanks to the Curley family!”
