2 BASIS Charter School Seniors Named 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars

On May 9, 2024, the U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced the selection of 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars.

We’re thrilled to report that the BASIS Charter Schools network has two U.S. Presidential Scholars this year. Congratulations to Matteo H. from BASIS Mesa and Sruti P. from BASIS Scottsdale!

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is highly prestigious, with only 161 students nationwide earning this honor. These winning scholars were narrowed down from more than 5,700 candidates. They are selected based on academic success and excellence in the arts and in technical education, which is determined through essays, school evaluations and transcripts. Additionally, students must show a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.

In 2024, two out of three U.S. Presidential Scholars from Arizona are BASIS Charter School students.

We are so proud of Matteo and Sruti for earning this outstanding award! Matteo and Sruti will be honored this summer with an online recognition program hosted by the U.S. Department of Education.

“Matteo is an exceptional individual,” says Christopher Lester, Head of School at BASIS Mesa. “His perseverance and innate ability to lead are traits we look to foster in all of our students. In my opinion, he is truly a model BASIS student.” Matteo will be attending Georgetown University following a two-year church mission. He plans to major in Science, Technology, and International Affairs.

Tyler Garvey, Head of School at BASIS Scottsdale, adds, “I am incredibly proud of Sruti for her dedication and hard work. She exemplifies the ideals of a Presidential Scholar.” Sruti will be attending Brown University with a major in Public Policy & Economics.

Matteo and Sruti were both invited to nominate a teacher that had a profound impact on their success. Matteo nominated Greg Thorson, an Economics teacher from BASIS Mesa, while Sruti nominated Charity Taylor-Antal, an English Literature teacher from BASIS Scottsdale. These teachers were recognized by the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program as Distinguished Teachers. Congratulations, Mr. Thorson and Ms. Taylor-Antal!

Our two U.S. Presidential Scholars and two Distinguished Teachers represent the best and brightest across the country!
