A few weeks ago, I graduated magna cum laude from George Mason University with double concentrations in finance and management information systems and had the honor of serving as the speaker for my college’s degree celebration ceremony.
While speaking in front of thousands of graduates and their families was an incredible milestone, the story I would like to share is really about the journey behind that moment.
Growing up, I was extremely shy. Public speaking was something that intimidated me, and I often questioned whether I belonged in leadership roles. Throughout college, however, I found myself repeatedly presented with opportunities that felt larger than my comfort zone. Whether serving in sustainability leadership positions, launching student organizations, participating in university leadership programs, or advocating for causes I cared about, I learned the same lesson over and over again: courage is not the absence of fear, it’s taking the next step anyway.
In my graduation speech, I reflected on a quote that became a guiding principle throughout my college years: “Courage, dear heart.” That simple message carried me through moments of uncertainty, challenge, and growth, ultimately leading me to a stage I never would have imagined standing on as a first-year student.
I believe this story could resonate with those who may be unsure of themselves or hesitant to pursue opportunities that feel intimidating.
