SA Smart Challenge - 0626 - BASIS Ed

BASIS San Antonio Shavano Wins first Place at SA Smart Challenge

We are thrilled to announce that a BASIS San Antonio Shavano team secured first place in the 2026 San Antonio Smart Challenge Competition! Rithvik S., Lakshanna K., Reya K., and Nishaant A. made up the team that proposed a solution to a San Antonio-specific problem related to this year’s competition topic: AI, San Antonio, and Quality of Life.

What is the SA Smart Challenge?

Led by a group of local STEM based non-profits and local government, the SA Smart Challenge calls for teams from all over the city to propose a strategy, product, or service as a solution to an issue in the city. Students prepare a fully developed Research Pitch Deck to present to a panel of judges and work their way to the finals in late May.

Environmental Education and Solution

Rithvik and his team developed an automated receptacle sorting product called “Scrappy,” using AI technology that would help San Antonio residents correctly sort through recyclable items. “We want to help the environment but also educate people so that eventually, all residents understand the sorting system,” says Rithvik. Their project included door-to-door market analysis and prototype engineering which led them to a successful pitch deck presentation!
