BASIS Tucson North Business and Finance Club Wins 1st Place in State Finals

On April 25, 2023, BASIS Tucson North‘s Business and Finance Club—BTN Financial—took home several wins at the 2023 Mayors’ Challenge for Economic Education State Finals in Mesa, AZ. They won first place in the Personal Finance Case Study Competition and second place in the Personal Finance Challenge Quiz Bowl Competition.

The Mayors’ Challenge for Economic Education is an annual competition put on by the Arizona Council on Economic Education (ACEE). To get to the finals, the BTN Financial team had to present a case study online (via Zoom) and participate in an online quiz bowl. They had to place sufficiently high in both categories to make it to the finals in Mesa. Unfortunately, BTN Financial did not take first place overall at the Mayor’s Challenge State Finals and therefore will not advance to Nationals this year, but we are incredibly proud of the team for placing first and second in the case study and quiz bowl competitions, respectively. Who’s to say what happens next year!

Congratulations to the BTN Financial team, which includes Johnny Y., Adam P., and Audrey A.! We would also like to extend a special thank you to Sydney A. and Iman B., whose contributions in the qualifying rounds made state finals possible.

About BASIS Tucson North’s Business and Finance Club: BTN Financial

The Business and Finance Club is a new club this year at BASIS Tucson North. It was the brainchild of 10th grader, Johnny Y., a highly motivated and brilliant student that plans to be an investment banker one day. BTN Financial is headed up by Mr. Vincent Carotenuto, a beloved BASIS Tucson North teacher who used to work as a Wall Street banker.

When not competing, BTN Financial studies a variety of personal and corporate finance topics, including investing, taxes, business structure, portfolio theory, and valuation.
