Celebrating Our BASIS Peoria AP Capstone Diploma Recipients

Thirteen students from BASIS Peoria—the #1 ranked high school in the U.S.—have earned the AP Capstone Diploma™ for their performance on AP® Exams during the 2023–24 school year.

To earn the AP Capstone Diploma, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on four additional AP Exams of their choice. This award recognizes students for their excellent critical thinking, research, collaboration and presentation skills.

“We are immensely proud of our students who participated in our AP Capstone Diploma program this past year,” says Leslee Briggs, Head of School at BASIS Peoria. “These students worked hard to earn this diploma, performing college-level research and building essential career skills in the process. AP coursework at BASIS Peoria

AP coursework is an important part of the curriculum at BASIS Peoria. Students begin taking AP courses in grade 9 and are required to take at least six AP Exams prior to graduation. Most of our students end up vastly exceeding this number, graduating with 11 or 12 AP Exams under their belt.

AP courses give students an opportunity to master challenging, college-level content while still in high school. By taking and passing numerous AP Exams, high school students can set themselves up for success in college and get ahead on their credits. In addition, AP coursework can help students stand out on their college applications.

BASIS Peoria offers AP courses in Math, Science, History and English, along with a variety of AP electives. AP Exam fees are fully covered by the school. Learn more about AP scores earned by students across the BASIS Charter Schools network.

About the AP Capstone Diploma program

The AP Capstone Diploma program is a project-based, two-year learning experience for high school students. It consists of two AP courses—AP Seminar and AP Research. In AP Seminar, students investigate topics in a variety of subject areas, write research-based essays, and give presentations. In AP Research, students design, plan, and conduct a year-long research project. Both courses are interdisciplinary, and students are encouraged to research topics that interest them.

Unlike traditional AP subject exams with a single end-of-year assessment, AP Seminar and AP Research assessments are project based. Teachers evaluate students through group projects, presentations, and individual essays completed throughout the year.

During the 2023-24 academic year, over 100,000 students at 2,500 schools participated in the AP Capstone Diploma program. Approximately 21,000 students at participating schools earned the AP Capstone Diploma recognition.

BASIS Charter Schools are proud to offer the AP Capstone Diploma program as part of our high school curriculum. This sequence of advanced courses is an amazing opportunity for our students to hone their research skills while exploring their passions.

Congratulations again to this year’s BASIS Peoria AP Capstone Diploma recipients!
