BASIS San Antonio Shavano rising junior Gabe C. earned third place at the inaugural National Geography Bee in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Gabe was one of just 38 students nationwide to advance to the national championship, selected from a competitive pool of approximately 6,000 participants. Created by two Harvard graduates, the National Geography Bee aims to be a fun way to inspire curiosity in learning geography.
For Gabe, an avid geography buff, this couldn’t have been a more exciting opportunity.
“I’ve been passionate about geography since I was a little kid. I’ve always loved maps and learning about places. When I first heard about this event, I was so ready to participate.” Says Gabe.
According to sponsor, Michelle Enman, the process for qualifying included a school geography bee that would determine regional and national placements. Gabe did so well in this event that he was able to skip regionals and head straight to the national competition in Cambridge. His determination and passion for geography helped Gabe go up against 6,000 students from 14 states and win third place.
Gabe’s mom, Edilyne, says that geography took over their household in preparation for this event, “We are so proud of Gabe. When we found out he was going to Nationals, our entire family became involved. My parents did research and we all took turns asking him practice questions so he could be ready.”
With a strong support system from school and home, Gabe has his sights set on next year’s competition. “Next year I want to win,” he says, “I’m going to keep practicing and learn from my mistakes so that I can win first place.”
Congratulations to Gabe on this extraordinary achievement!
