Three Students Earn City of Phoenix Youth Leader Honors

BASIS Charter Schools is proud to celebrate three exceptional students who have been recognized by the City of Phoenix as Outstanding Youth Leaders of the Year. Timothy S. and Hailey L. of BASIS Ahwatukee, along with Anay P. of BASIS Peoria, have been named Council District Winners in this prestigious citywide program.

These honors reflect not only academic excellence but also leadership, resilience, and meaningful contributions to the Phoenix community. The students were recognized alongside civic leaders, including Mayor Kate Gallego and Phoenix City Council members, at an official awards luncheon on May 1.

Recognizing Leadership Across Phoenix

The City of Phoenix Outstanding Youth Leader of the Year program celebrates high school students in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate exceptional leadership, overcome adversity, and make a lasting impact in their schools and communities. Each year, students are selected as Council District Winners, with top honorees chosen from across the city.

This recognition highlights the importance of youth leadership and civic engagement, values that are deeply embedded in the BASIS Charter Schools experience.

BASIS Ahwatukee: Leadership Rooted in Purpose

At BASIS Ahwatukee, both Timothy S. and Hailey L. exemplify how personal experiences can inspire meaningful leadership.

Timothy S., the District 6 Winner and overall Outstanding Phoenix Youth Leader, has turned early health challenges into a mission to expand access to care. Through his leadership in sports medicine and community initiatives, he is working toward becoming a physician-researcher dedicated to protecting underserved athletes and families.

Learn more about Timothy’s journey by watching his highlight video, which showcases his commitment to service, science, and community impact.

Hailey L., the District 8 Winner, draws inspiration from personal loss and the resilience she learned from her family. She is pursuing a future as a forensic toxicologist, with a goal of uncovering truth and serving families in Phoenix with compassion and dignity. Her work reflects a strong commitment to justice, empathy, and community support.

BASIS Peoria: Service That Builds Community

At BASIS Peoria, Anay P., the District 2 Winner, has distinguished himself through hands-on service and advocacy. From delivering heat relief resources to supporting youth mental health initiatives and preserving Arizona’s history, Anay demonstrates a deep commitment to ensuring every member of his community is seen and supported.

His approach to leadership is grounded in listening, respect, and action, reflecting the values of civic responsibility and community care.

A Commitment to Student Leadership

These recognitions underscore BASIS Charter Schools’ ongoing commitment to developing students who excel not only academically, but also as leaders and engaged citizens. Through opportunities for service learning, leadership development, and community engagement, BASIS students are empowered to make meaningful contributions beyond the classroom.

The achievements of Timothy S. (BASIS Ahwatukee), Hailey L. (BASIS Ahwatukee), and Anay P. (BASIS Peoria) are a testament to what students can accomplish when they combine curiosity, resilience, and a passion for service.

BASIS Charter Schools congratulates these students on their well-deserved recognition and celebrates the positive impact they continue to make across the Phoenix community.
